Performing an eye test

Why are eye tests important?

Beyond Just Vision

Regular eye exams are essential not just for ensuring you have clear vision and the right glasses or contact lenses, but also for protecting your overall health and well-being. They are a vital tool for early detection and treatment of eye conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts, which can potentially lead to vision loss if left untreated.

Eye exams also ensure accurate prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses, allowing you to see clearly and comfortably, especially important for children as their vision is still developing.

Beyond vision, comprehensive eye exams can assess your overall eye health, detecting early signs of serious health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure. Knowing your vision is healthy gives you peace of mind, allowing you to focus on enjoying all that life has to offer.

Different Types of Eye Tests

Eye Tests for Every Stage of Life

Vision Screening

This is a quick and basic check of vision acuity, often used for children or as a preliminary test. It assesses your ability to see letters or symbols at a specific distance. Vision screenings are sometimes performed in schools or at community events.

Contact Lens Exam

This exam evaluates your suitability for contact lenses and determines the appropriate lens type and prescription. It includes a thorough eye exam, assessment of corneal health, and evaluation of your eye-fitting characteristics.

Children’s Eye Exam

A children’s eye exam includes all the elements of a comprehensive eye exam but is tailored to a child’s age and developmental stage. It often includes specific tests to evaluate focusing skills, eye tracking, and coordination.

Diabetic Eye Exam

Also known as Diabetic Retinopathy Screening. Diabetic eye exams use dilated pupils and specialised equipment to assess the health of your retina. Diabeties can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision loss.

Glaucoma Screening

Glaucoma is a serious condition that can damage the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. Regular eye exams for glaucoma use a tonometer to measure the pressure inside your eye, as well as other tests to assess the health of your optic nerve.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration affects the central part of the retina, impacting your ability to see fine details. It can be detected through a Macular Degeneration Screening, which includes a detailed assessment of your retina.

Macular Degeneration

Routine Eye Check-Up

This exam thoroughly assesses the current health of your eyes. It includes a comprehensive evaluation of your vision, eye pressure, and the overall health of your eye structures. A routine check-up can help identify any potential issues.

General Guidelines

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

The frequency of your eye exams depends on your age, overall health, and any existing eye conditions. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Children should have their first eye exam at six months of age
  • Regular eye exams are recommended every year for school-aged children
  • Healthy adults aged 18 to 60 should have a comprehensive eye exam every two years
  • Adults over 60 should have a comprehensive eye exam every year
  • Those with existing eye conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, may require more frequent exams.

If you experience any changes in your vision, such as blurry vision, double vision, difficulty focusing, or headaches, book an appointment for an eye test as soon as possible, regardless of your age.
